The Day I Know Of

The book “The Day I Know Of” is composed by three fictional stories that are based on memories about remarkable events throughout the year. The unbound pages of the book would allow readers to manipulate and re-sequence the pages thus create their own narrative out of equivocal imageries and conversational texts. I have utilized various materials to demonstrate the aspect of time within the book, including the use of translucent paper on the cover of each chapter as well as the whole book. The translucent cover acts like a veil that resembles the ambiguity of memory as time passes, allowing only distinctive fragments to emerge among the blurriness. In addition to the cover material, I also divided each chapter by wrapping unbound pages with newsprint paper into three packets. This design makes the process of reading the book similar to a “treasure hunt” as the reader tries to collect the disclose clues to each story, again imitating the impression of remembrance. The newsprint paper also creates a nostalgic impression with its warm tone and tender texture. The book “Iris Garden” by John Cage and William Gedney inspired me to consider remembrance as a manipulative process when we seek self-consistency. For which we often conform to our presumptions, convincing ourselves by constructing memories with fragments of fading clues from the past.
